- Best Breakfast in Rice Village: Tacos, Kolaches and Cafes
The best breakfast in Rice Village starts early on Kirby Drive: Kolache Factory typically opens at 6am, and Black Walnut Cafe and Torchy's Tacos on Times Boulevard typically open at 7am on weekdays. For pastries, Bādolina Bakery & Café on Morningside Drive bakes Israeli-style croissants and sambusak, and on weekends Hungry's, Sixty Vines, Hamsa and Cyclone Anaya's add brunch menus with eggs, French toast and breakfast tacos.
Rice Village has been a Houston shopping district since 1938, according to the district itself, and its breakfast now comes in four accents: Czech, Tex-Mex, Australian and Israeli. This is the shortlist we'd hand a friend who is staying near Rice University or the Texas Medical Center and wants something better than a hotel buffet.
The quick list
- Earliest kolache: Kolache Factory on Kirby Drive, typically from 6am Monday to Saturday.
- Breakfast tacos: Torchy's Tacos on Times Boulevard, or the breakfast tacos on Cyclone Anaya's weekend brunch menu.
- Closest thing to a diner: Black Walnut Cafe on Morningside Drive, with a full plate menu from 7am every day.
- Best pastry: Bādolina Bakery & Café, especially on Fridays, when the challah and babka come out.
- Laptop-friendly coffee breakfast: Bluestone Lane on University Boulevard, with an all-day breakfast menu.
- Weekend brunch with a drink: Sixty Vines, Hamsa or Hungry's.
Where is Rice Village, and how did we define it?
Rice Village is the walkable shopping district just west of Rice University in Houston, in ZIP code 77005. For this guide we kept to its retail blocks: Kirby Drive on the west, Greenbriar Drive on the east, Tangley Street on the north and Times Boulevard on the south, with University Boulevard, Morningside Drive and Rice Boulevard running through the middle. That means good spots in West University Place and Upper Kirby are not on this list, even when they're a short drive away.
For the wider neighborhood, see our Rice Village and West U area guide and the full Rice Village restaurant guide.
How we chose
Every pick is inside the boundary above and was confirmed open on its own official website (or the official Rice Village district site) in November 2026. Each one serves real breakfast food, not just coffee: kolaches, tacos, eggs, pastries or a breakfast plate. We sorted them by when they open, because in Rice Village that matters more than anything else. Weekday breakfast is a short list; on Saturday and Sunday the choice nearly doubles.
Hours and menus change. Treat every time below as "typically" and check the official site before you go.
Where can you get breakfast in Rice Village on a weekday?
Five places serve breakfast on weekday mornings in Rice Village: Kolache Factory, Black Walnut Cafe, Torchy's Tacos, Bādolina Bakery & Café (closed Mondays) and Bluestone Lane.
Kolache Factory
5810 Kirby Dr, between Tangley and Plumb · typically Mon–Sat 6am–2pm, Sun 7am–2pm · $
Kolache Factory on Kirby Drive is the earliest breakfast in Rice Village and the one to grab on the way to a 7am shift in the Medical Center. Order the Ranchero (scrambled eggs, ham, picante sauce, cheese and jalapeños in soft dough), a Potato, Egg & Cheese, or the Sausage & Gravy, plus a cinnamon roll for the car.
I didn't know that: Kolache Factory is a Houston original. John and Jerri Banks opened the first store in Houston in 1982 and built the business by delivering kolaches to churches, schools and community groups, according to the company's history page. And the savory, meat-filled ones? Their old-world name is klobasnek (plural klobasniki), a name Kolache Factory's own site uses. Purists save the word kolache for the sweet, fruit- or cheese-filled ones.
Best for: an early, cheap breakfast you can eat with one hand. More shops in our kolaches and donuts guide.
Black Walnut Cafe
5510 Morningside Dr, Suite 150 · typically opens 7am daily · $$
Black Walnut Cafe on Morningside Drive is the nearest thing Rice Village has to a classic diner: a full breakfast menu, table service and plates big enough to skip lunch. Order the Chorizo Migas, the Sweet Potato Breakfast Hash, the Texas Breakfast, or the Bread Pudding French Toast if you want dessert first.
Insider tip: Black Walnut runs an early-bird morning happy hour on weekdays, typically 7am to 9:30am. The coffee is from GEVA Coffee, a longtime local roasting partner the cafe features on its site.
Best for: a sit-down weekday breakfast meeting, or a family that wants something for everyone at the table.
Torchy's Tacos
2400 Times Blvd · typically Mon–Fri from 7am, Sat–Sun from 9am · $
Torchy's Tacos on Times Boulevard is the breakfast taco stop in Rice Village, at the south edge of the district. The breakfast taco menu covers the classics, like bacon, egg and cheese, chorizo, egg and cheese and a migas taco, plus a breakfast burrito. Add a side of Torchy's green chile queso, which the chain calls award-winning.
Best for: a fast, filling weekday breakfast. For the citywide picture, see our best breakfast tacos in Houston guide.
Bādolina Bakery & Café
5555 Morningside Dr · typically Tue–Sun 7am–5pm, closed Mondays · $–$$
Bādolina Bakery & Café on Morningside Drive bakes modern Israeli and Middle Eastern pastry, and it is the most interesting breakfast in Rice Village. Order a pistachio or almond raspberry croissant, a sambusak (a stuffed pastry, here filled with sabich-style eggplant and egg, or shakshuka with feta), burekitas with spinach and cheese, or a cardamom bun.
I didn't know that: Bādolina began as a spin-off of the bread service at Doris Metropolitan, the steakhouse from the same Sof Hospitality group, and opened in June 2021, according to the bakery's own site. Insider tip: the challah and the babka are Fridays only, so Friday is the day to go.
Best for: pastry lovers, and anyone bored of eggs. See more in our best bakeries in Houston guide.
Bluestone Lane
2414 University Blvd · all-day breakfast menu · $$
Bluestone Lane on University Boulevard is an Australian-style café, part of a chain with 55-plus cafés and coffee shops across the country, and it serves its breakfast menu all day. Order the Avocado Smash, the BL Big Brekkie, the Lemon Ricotta Pancakes or a Bacon, Egg & Cheese Croissant, with a flat white. The Rice Village café page does not list hours, so check the app or call before an early visit.
Best for: a slower coffee-and-toast breakfast, or working from a café table.
Where to eat breakfast in Rice Village on the weekend
On Saturdays and Sundays, four Rice Village restaurants add brunch menus to the weekday five: Hungry's, Sixty Vines, Hamsa and Cyclone Anaya's. Most start at 10am or later, so they suit late risers.
Hungry's Cafe
2356 Rice Blvd · weekend brunch typically Sat–Sun 10am–3pm · $$
Hungry's on Rice Boulevard serves weekend brunch with a long menu: Crab Cake Eggs Benedict, Croissant French Toast, migas, chilaquiles and the Hungry's Shortstack. Hungry's opened in 1975 as an international sandwich shop in a bungalow on lower Westheimer in Montrose, according to its own history, so it has been feeding Houston for about half a century.
Best for: a group brunch where everyone wants something different.
Sixty Vines
2540 University Blvd · weekend brunch typically Sat–Sun 10am–3pm · $$
Sixty Vines on University Boulevard serves brunch on weekends from a two-story building with a greenhouse patio. Order the Toffee Walnut Pull Apart Bread for the table, then the Carrot Cake Pancakes, the Winemakers Breakfast or the Pistachio & Spiced Cherry French Toast.
I didn't know that: the name is literal. Sixty Vines pours 60 wines on tap, according to the restaurant, so there is a lot more than house sparkling to choose from at brunch.
Best for: a celebratory brunch with wine.
Hamsa
5555 Morningside Dr, Suite 100 · weekend brunch typically Sat–Sun from 11:30am until 2:30pm, closed Mondays · $$
Hamsa on Morningside Drive is a modern Israeli restaurant from Sof Hospitality, the same group behind Bādolina at the same address, and its weekend brunch is short and strong. Order the Shakshuka, the Shakshuka Hummus with a soft-boiled egg, the Aruk herb omelette with labaneh and tahini, or the Babka French Toast with raspberries, plus a Turkish coffee.
Best for: a brunch that tastes nothing like the rest of the list. For more, see our best brunch in Rice Village guide.

5214 Morningside Dr · typically opens 10am Sat–Sun, 11am weekdays · $$
Cyclone Anaya's on Morningside Drive is the Tex-Mex brunch pick in Rice Village. Its brunch menu includes Breakfast Tacos, Chilaquiles Verdes, Eggchiladas, Chicken & Waffles and Tres Leches Pancakes. The family restaurant group dates to 1966, and its story starts with Cyclone Anaya, a wrestler who, according to the restaurant, became Champion of Mexico at 17.
Best for: breakfast tacos at a sit-down table, with a margarita if it's that kind of Sunday. More in our best Tex-Mex in Houston guide.
