- Best BBQ Near Rice Village, Houston: 9 Joints Worth Finding
Rice Village itself has no dedicated barbecue pits on its own blocks. What it has is location: Goode Company Barbeque and Loro Asian Smokehouse are both on Kirby Drive less than a mile north, and a 10-minute drive in any direction puts you in range of nine barbecue joints, including four with Michelin Bib Gourmand recognition.
This guide covers all nine, organized by how far they sit from the center of Rice Village at Kirby Drive and University Boulevard.
What do we mean by Rice Village BBQ?
Rice Village — the walkable retail and dining district near Rice University, roughly bounded by University Boulevard to the north, Sunset Boulevard to the south, Kirby Drive to the east, and Greenbriar Drive to the west — has no dedicated barbecue pits on its own blocks. What it does have is a location that puts Upper Kirby, Montrose, Greenway Plaza, Bellaire, and Third Ward all within easy reach. For this guide, a 10-minute drive from Kirby and University is the boundary. Every pick below is inside it.
How we chose
Each restaurant was confirmed open on its official website, with current hours and a menu, as of October 2026. We looked for a real smoke program, something specific that makes the trip worth it, and enough variety across the list to cover weekday lunches, weekend afternoons, and nights out. Hours change and several of these pits sell out before closing time: check each restaurant’s site before you go.
On Kirby Drive: within walking distance
Goode Company Barbeque
5109 Kirby Dr, Houston · open daily
Goode Company has been on Kirby since 1977 and is the anchor of the whole strip. Jim Goode built his smoke program around live mesquite fire, a Czech sausage recipe handed down through the family, and the Brazos Bottom Pecan Pie, which became its own attraction long before the ribs did. Order a half-rack or full rack of ribs, the Czech sausage, and the brisket. Four Goode Company restaurants share this stretch of Kirby, making it easy to build a full afternoon here.
Best for: first-time visitors, the Czech sausage, and the Brazos Bottom Pecan Pie. More on the area in the Upper Kirby restaurant guide.
Loro Asian Smokehouse and Bar
5333 Kirby Dr, Houston · open daily
Two James Beard Award winners — pitmaster Aaron Franklin of Franklin Barbecue in Austin and sushi chef Tyson Cole of Uchi — opened a restaurant together where Texas smoking meets Southeast Asian flavor. The brisket is Franklin’s. The brisket fried rice, pork belly, and boozy slushees belong to Loro alone. A $15 Lunch 2 Step deal runs daily from 11am to 2pm; happy hour runs Monday through Friday 2–6pm. The patio is dog-friendly.
Best for: groups, the lunch deal, and anyone who wants BBQ with a Southeast Asian spin.
Within 2 miles: Upper Kirby, Montrose, and Greenway Plaza
Pinkerton’s Barbecue — Upper Kirby
3801 Farnham St, Houston · closed Mondays
Grant Pinkerton has earned a Michelin Bib Gourmand. The Upper Kirby location does something you rarely see in Texas BBQ: whole hog smoked intact — not split flat as in Carolina-style — and presented at the counter for on-the-spot slicing. The Saturday whole hog sells out, so arrive when the doors open or you’ll miss it. On any other day, the prime brisket over post oak and mesquite, the pork prime rib, and the cheddar link are plenty of reason to make the trip. The Pinkerton’s guide has more detail.
Best for: prime brisket, the Saturday whole hog, and the cheddar link.
The Pit Room
1201 Richmond Ave, Houston · open daily
The Pit Room has earned a Michelin Bib Gourmand and holds a spot on Texas Monthly’s Top 50. The detail that surprises most first-timers: the tortillas are made with rendered brisket fat. Those fat-rendered tortillas wrap a smoked chicken taco with griddled cheese and charred garlic, which is the single most-shared item on the menu. Two 500-gallon offset barrel smokers anchor the back of the building. Breakfast tacos run from 7am. The outdoor bar at The Patio next door extends the afternoon. More on the neighborhood in the Montrose restaurant guide.
Best for: the brisket-fat tortilla taco, venison sausage, and the Frito pie.
Feges BBQ — Greenway Plaza
3 Greenway Plaza Suite C-210, Houston · Monday–Friday, 11am–2pm only
Pitmaster Patrick Feges is a Purple Heart recipient who learned to smoke meat after returning from Iraq. His wife Erin Smith funded the restaurant after winning the cooking show Chopped! in 2016. That’s the backstory. The brisket, the loaded BBQ baked potato, and the pitroom gumbo are what keep the line going past noon. Feges earned a spot on Texas Monthly’s Top 50 in 2021.
This is a weekday lunch counter inside an office complex food court. Plan for Monday through Friday between 11am and 2pm.
Best for: weekday lunches and any deliberate BBQ pilgrimage through the inner loop.
A short drive: Bellaire and Third Ward (2–4 miles)
Blood Bros. BBQ
5425 Bellaire Blvd, Bellaire · closed Mondays
Blood Bros. has earned a Michelin Bib Gourmand three consecutive years (2024, 2025, 2026), a New York Times best restaurant nod in 2021, and a James Beard nomination for Best Chef Texas in 2022. Founders Robin Wong, Terry Wong, and Quy Hoang grew up together in Alief; they are not blood brothers — the name was always the inside joke. The menu rotates and blends Texas smoke with Vietnamese and Korean influence: Pho-Strami sandwich, brisket chow fun, smoked Spam musubi. Fridays bring pork belly burnt ends and sticky ribs. Saturdays bring Big Beef Ribs, first-come. See more options in the Bellaire restaurant guide.
Best for: fusion BBQ, adventurous eaters, and dinner as well as lunch.
Ray’s Real Pit BBQ Shack
3929 Old Spanish Trail Suite 300, Houston · closed Sundays
Ray Busch learned to smoke from Third Ward legend Mr. River Falls and ran a BBQ trailer out of nightclub parking lots starting in 1985 before opening a brick-and-mortar in 2011. The smoked oxtails are what the regulars talk about most, alongside classic brisket and spare rib plates. The potato salad is housemade. Arrive by 6pm — the best cuts sell out. More on the area in the Third Ward restaurant guide and our Third Ward guide.
Best for: traditional Houston pit BBQ, smoked oxtails, and the deep roots of the Third Ward smoke tradition.
Worth the drive: the Heights (4–6 miles)
Truth BBQ
110 S Heights Blvd, Houston · closed Mondays
Truth BBQ has earned a Michelin Bib Gourmand and a Texas Monthly Top 50 slot. The brisket and the beef ribs are the main event. The layer cakes, baked in-house daily, often sell out before the meat does. On weekends the restaurant closes when it’s sold out, which can happen before 2pm. Arrive when the doors open or call ahead. More to do while you’re up there in the Heights restaurant guide.
Best for: the brisket, the beef ribs, and the layer cake. Arrive early.
Terry Black’s Barbecue
1329 N Shepherd Dr, Houston · open daily
The Terry Black family has been smoking brisket in Lockhart, Texas for generations. Their first Houston location opened in 2025, bringing counter-service Central Texas BBQ — meats sold by the pound — to the Heights. Order the ribs, the brisket, and the banana pudding. The restaurant offers pit master tours, called the Terry Black’s Experience, for groups who want to see the operation up close.
Best for: Central Texas-style counter service and daily availability. The one open on every day of the week, unlike most on this list.
