- Barbecue Downtown Houston: 8 BBQ Joints Worth Knowing
Downtown Houston isn't where most visitors go looking for barbecue — the big names are in the Heights, Spring, and along the highways outside the Loop. But the central urban core has eight BBQ joints that are genuinely worth knowing. One has been hidden inside downtown office towers since 1951. Another sits on a family-owned lot in EaDo that hasn't changed hands in over 100 years. This guide covers spots inside the 610 Loop: the CBD, Midtown, EaDo, Third Ward, and Montrose, all within about 3 miles of the CBD.
The quick list
- Best weekday CBD lunch: Otto's BBQ, four downtown office-tower locations open Monday through Friday only
- Best CBD food hall BBQ: Dozier's BBQ at The Finn, a fourth-generation Texas smokehouse near the Theater District
- Best EaDo beer garden: J-Bar-M Barbecue, 350 seats on a century-old family property on Leeland Street
- Best pre-game: Cobo's, two blocks from Daikin Park, with brisket tacos and extended game-day hours
- Best longtime Midtown joint: Pappas Bar-B-Q on Pierce Street, serving Houston since 1967
- Best soul food and BBQ crossover: Ray's BBQ Shack, Third Ward, rib tips and shrimp po'boys on the same menu
- Best newcomer: What It Do BBQ, opened 2025 in Third Ward with Creole-influenced sides
- Best brisket inside the Loop: The Pit Room in Montrose, Central Texas-style wood smoke with consistent lines at lunch
How we chose
Every spot on this list was confirmed open on its official website or through current listing sources as of October 2026. "Downtown" here means the central urban core inside the 610 Loop: the CBD, Theater District, Midtown, EaDo, Third Ward, and Montrose. All eight spots are within roughly 3 miles of the CBD. We left out spots in Greenway Plaza, the Heights, and the suburbs — those belong in the broader Houston BBQ guide. Hours and menus change; check each spot's site before you go.
In the CBD
Otto's BBQ
CBD — 500 Dallas St, 711 Louisiana St, 600 Travis St, 1200 McKinney St · Mon–Fri, typically 6:30am–4pm
Otto's BBQ has been inside Houston's downtown office towers since founder Otto Sofka opened his first spot in 1951. It now runs four separate CBD locations — inside the Allen Center, Pennzoil Place, Chase Tower, and Houston Center — and you won't find any of them from the street. They're weekday-only operations serving the office-building crowd, which means hotel visitors and weekend visitors miss them entirely.
That's a shame. Third-generation family-run, Otto's has served Presidents, NFL Hall of Famers, and, per the family's own history, Liberace. The brisket is hickory-smoked for 18 hours. The burgers are ground fresh daily from Certified Angus beef. And the breakfast brisket tacos — served from early morning on weekdays — are one of the better-kept morning meals in downtown Houston.
What to order: The brisket plate and the dirty rice. The breakfast brisket tacos are worth an early stop.
Best for: CBD office workers and weekday visitors. Four locations gives you flexibility depending on which building you're near.
Dozier's BBQ at The Finn
CBD — 712 Main St (The Finn food hall) · Mon–Wed 11am–8pm, Thu–Fri 11am–11pm, Sat 9am–5pm, closed Sun
Dozier's BBQ & Meat Market is a fourth-generation family operation out of Fulshear, founded in 1957. The downtown outpost is inside The Finn food hall on Main Street, a short walk from the Theater District. It's the most accessible BBQ option in the CBD for anyone not working in a downtown tower: no building badge required, open evenings and Saturdays.
The menu runs traditional Texas: brisket, smoked sausage, ribs, and sides. The pedigree spans nearly 70 years in the smokehouse business.
Best for: Weekend visits to the CBD, pre-theater dining, or anyone staying near Main Street. Thursday and Friday evenings until 11pm make it a solid late-night option.
In EaDo
EaDo — East Downtown — is one of Houston's most rapidly changing inner-loop neighborhoods, anchored by Daikin Park, Shell Energy Stadium, and the George R. Brown Convention Center. It also has the strongest BBQ story of any downtown sub-neighborhood. More dining options are in our EaDo restaurant guide.
J-Bar-M Barbecue
EaDo — 2201 Leeland St · Tue–Thu 11am–10pm, Fri–Sat 11am–midnight, Sun 11am–5pm, closed Mon
The backstory here is worth knowing. The "J" and "M" in J-Bar-M are for John Toomey — who was 97 years old when the restaurant opened — and his late wife Michelene. The branding iron design had been his dream for decades. The two-acre property on Leeland Street has been in John's family for over 100 years, and he watched Houston build itself around it.
Pitmaster Arash Kharat, who trained at Blood Bros. BBQ, runs the kitchen. Texas Monthly named J-Bar-M one of the 25 Best New and Improved BBQ Joints in Texas in 2023. The property has 350 seats total across the covered beer garden and dining room. Live music runs on weekends. And the menu extends past traditional plates into brisket tacos, brisket quesadillas, and a weekend brunch built around sliced brisket and eggs Benedict.
What to order: The jalapeño cheddar sausage alongside the brisket. Weekend brunch is worth a separate visit.
Best for: A long Friday or Saturday evening with a group. Half a mile from the GRB Convention Center and the EaDo neighborhood.
Cobo's
EaDo — 2012 Rusk St · Tue–Thu 11am–10pm, Fri–Sat 11am–midnight, Sun 11am–10pm, closed Mon
Pitmaster Raul "Cobo" Jacobo Jr. built this concept from a backyard catering operation in Atascocita into a permanent EaDo spot at 2012 Rusk Street — two blocks from Daikin Park. It has become the natural pre-game BBQ stop for Astros, Dynamo, and Dash fans.
The menu mixes Central Texas smoke with Tex-Mex instinct: a boudin mac and brisket quesadilla pressed flat (the pitmaster's own pick), birria tacos with consommé for dipping, and BBQ wings alongside standard brisket and ribs. Hours typically extend on game days.
Best for: Pre-game before Daikin Park or Shell Energy Stadium. Arrive early on game nights — lines form.
In Midtown
Pappas Bar-B-Q
Midtown — 1217 Pierce St · Typically Mon–Thu 6am–9pm, Fri 6am–10pm, Sat–Sun 11am–9pm; check the official site before you go
The Pappas family opened a barbecue spot on Pierce Street in 1967, making this one of the longest-running BBQ joints in Houston proper. It's part of the Pappas restaurant family now — the group behind Pappadeaux and Papasito's — but the Pierce Street location has kept its neighborhood feel. Breakfast runs from opening on weekdays, giving it a rare morning BBQ window in Midtown.
The brisket is slow-smoked over hickory and mesquite. The mixed platter — beef, ham, sausage, and a rib — is the move for a first visit.
Best for: A reliable sit-down in Midtown. More options nearby in our Midtown restaurant guide.
In Third Ward
Ray's BBQ Shack
Third Ward — 3929 Old Spanish Trail, Suite 300 · Mon–Tue 11am–6pm, Wed–Sat 11am–8pm, closed Sun
Ray's is a Third Ward institution that puts smoked meats and Gulf Coast soul food on the same menu without apology. Brisket, rib tips, and pulled pork share space with a shrimp po'boy basket, fried catfish, and house-made dirty rice. The rib tip sandwich is the standout: tender, fatty, smoky, and under-known outside the neighborhood.
The address on Old Spanish Trail sits inside the Loop's southern arc, about 3.5 miles southeast of the CBD.
Best for: A lunch that gives you more than a standard brisket plate. Go Wednesday through Saturday for the full menu and hours.
What It Do BBQ
Third Ward — 3874 Holman St · Mon–Sat 10:30am–6pm, closed Sun
What It Do opened in 2025 next to TDECU Stadium in Houston's historic Third Ward. The approach is Creole-influenced: the Creole Candy Wings are a signature dish, the brisket empanadas are an unexpected pleasure, and the meal closes with deep-fried bread pudding and caramel drizzle. Smoke is the baseline; everything else leans into Houston's Gulf Coast traditions.
Hours are limited — essentially the lunch window — so this is a weekday or weekend morning stop.
Best for: Trying something genuinely new at a 2025 newcomer. The wing recipe alone earns the trip.
In Montrose
The Pit Room
Montrose — 1201 Richmond Ave · Daily 7–10:30am (breakfast), 11am–9pm (lunch and dinner)
The Pit Room is the best brisket you'll find inside the 610 Loop. The Richmond Ave location in Montrose is about 2.5 miles from the CBD — the farthest stop on this list — but it's inside the Loop and the quality earns it. Pitmaster Roberto Patino trained with some of the top names in Texas barbecue, and the result is Central Texas brisket done with discipline: long wood smoke, proper bark, clean smoke ring. The jalapeño cheddar sausage and smoked turkey round out a focused menu that draws lines at lunch.
The patio opens up capacity after the initial rush. Breakfast hours from 7am mean BBQ tacos are available earlier here than anywhere else on this list.
What to order: The brisket plate. Arrive at 11am when the meats are freshest.
Best for: The serious brisket run inside the Loop. More nearby options in our Montrose restaurant guide.
Save this: a downtown BBQ crawl
Never drive between BBQ stops after eating. Use rideshare for either route.
The full loop (weekend, allow 4–5 hours):
- Start at Dozier's BBQ at The Finn on Main Street for a midday plate.
- Rideshare east to J-Bar-M on Leeland for the beer garden and sausage.
- End with brisket at The Pit Room in Montrose on the way back.
Game-day route (Astros or Dynamo):
- Lunch at Cobo's on Rusk Street, two blocks from Daikin Park.
- Return post-game to Dozier's at The Finn (open until 11pm on Thursdays and Fridays).
Before you go
- Otto's (CBD office towers) is weekday-only. You may need building access for some locations. It's invisible on weekends.
- Dozier's at The Finn is the best CBD option for weekends and evenings — no badge needed, open Saturdays.
- J-Bar-M and Cobo's both close Mondays. Check for extended game-day hours at Cobo's.
- The Pit Room and Ray's BBQ Shack both sell out of popular cuts before closing. Arrive early.
