Dance Salad Festival is Houston’s annual international contemporary dance festival, held each spring at the Wortham Theater Center in the downtown Theater District. Founded by Festival Director Nancy Henderek, it presents dance companies from around the world in a single evening — the equivalent of a tasting menu for contemporary dance.
What is Dance Salad Festival?
Dance Salad is one evening, many companies. Rather than booking a single company for a full show, Festival Director Nancy Henderek selects a group of companies — from the U.S. and abroad — to each perform one piece per night. Individual works typically run ten to twenty minutes; you see all of them back to back in a single 90-to-100-minute program with no intermission.
The salad metaphor is precise: different ingredients, unexpected combinations, served together. One program might open with a Japanese Butoh-influenced solo, transition into a high-energy ensemble work with electronic music, and close with something rooted in West African dance. You are not choosing between styles; you are seeing all of them.
Henderek launched the festival in Houston without a major arts institution behind it. Her premise was that Houston had the audience for international contemporary dance — it just lacked the event. Today, Dance Salad has presented companies from dozens of countries.
The festival leans toward work that is physically ambitious, visually distinctive, or conceptually unusual. If you have only seen ballet or Broadway-style dance before, Dance Salad will be genuinely new.
The programs
The festival typically runs across multiple evenings, with a different company lineup on different nights. If you can only attend once, a single evening offers a complete program.
Each program typically runs 90 to 100 minutes without an intermission, with brief pauses between companies as stage crews reset. The Wortham’s Cullen Theater is the primary performance venue. With around 1,100 seats and a traditional proscenium stage, it has clear sightlines from most of the house. Center-orchestra seats put you close to the action; the mezzanine offers a broader view of floor patterns that some dance fans prefer.
Program assignments and company descriptions are posted on the Dance Salad website before tickets go on sale. Reading the brief writeup for each company before you arrive makes the performances easier to follow.
When does Dance Salad take place?
Dance Salad typically runs for four to five days in April, including at least one weekend. Exact dates shift slightly from year to year.
This year’s dates: Check dancesalad.org for the current season’s schedule, which typically goes live in late winter or early spring.
April in Houston is one of the better months for evening events: temperatures are typically in the high 60s to mid-70s, the peak summer humidity has not arrived, and the city’s spring cultural calendar is active. Our best time to visit Houston guide covers what else is on in spring if you are planning a longer trip.
Tickets and pricing
Tickets are sold through the Wortham box office and the Dance Salad website. Prices vary by seat location and night; center-orchestra seats typically cost more than side sections or the upper tiers. Multi-night packages — typically covering one Program A and one Program B — are usually available at a discount compared to buying two individual tickets.
Opening night and the final Saturday performance tend to book faster than weeknight showings. Early purchase is recommended. The ticket site includes a seat map so you can see availability before you commit.
Student rush and group discounts: Check dancesalad.org for student rush availability and group pricing; both have been offered in past seasons. Check the official site for current-year policies.

Save this: Dance Salad day-of checklist
- Buy tickets online before you arrive; box office lines at the Wortham can be slow on opening night.
- Read each company’s description on dancesalad.org before you go — a brief paragraph per company that helps you know what to watch for.
- Arrive 20 to 30 minutes before curtain. Late seating is typically held until the break between companies, so arriving late may mean missing the first piece.
- Dress is smart casual. Most people wear what they would wear to a nice restaurant.
- Photography and recording are not permitted during performances.
- If you plan to attend on multiple nights, write all dates on your calendar the day you buy tickets.
- Reserve dinner in advance; restaurants in the Theater District fill quickly on performance nights.
- Plan for 90 to 100 minutes with no intermission.
