Things to do in River Oaks lean cultural, leafy, and unhurried. The neighborhood sits a short drive from Buffalo Bayou Park, the Menil Collection, Bayou Bend, and the River Oaks Theatre, which means a weekend afternoon can easily move from a 1939 art-deco cinema to a Rothko meditation to a walk under oak canopies along Buffalo Bayou. River Oaks does not have a busy nightlife strip — that lives in Montrose and Midtown next door — but it does have one of the densest concentrations of museums, gardens, and historic film houses in Houston.

Here is what to see, where to walk, and how to spend an afternoon in the neighborhood without overplanning it.

Catch a film at the River Oaks Theatre

The River Oaks Theatre on West Gray opened in 1939 and was one of the country's premier art-house cinemas for decades. It went dark briefly during the pandemic, but a community-led campaign — a rare win for historic preservation in Houston — brought it back. It now screens independent and foreign films, late-night cult classics, and the occasional restored 35mm print. Tickets run about $14, and the upstairs balcony is the nicest seat in the house.

Visit Bayou Bend

Bayou Bend, the former Hogg family estate, sits on a 14-acre property at the edge of Memorial Park and now operates as a museum of American decorative arts and gardens. The house tour walks you through 28 period rooms, and the gardens — eight of them — are open to the public for self-guided visits. The Hoggs donated the property in the 1950s, and it remains one of the most peaceful spots inside the Loop. Admission is around $15.

Walk the Buffalo Bayou trails

Buffalo Bayou Park stretches east from Shepherd Drive to Downtown, and the River Oaks edge of the park is one of the prettiest entry points. The trails run on both sides of the water, with footbridges every half mile or so. The skate park near Sabine Street and the Cistern — a decommissioned underground water reservoir now used for art installations — are both worth a stop. Bike rentals are available at the Lost Lake visitor center on the north side.

Wander the Menil Collection

The Menil Collection sits just south of River Oaks in a Renzo Piano building set among a small village of bungalows. Admission is free, and the permanent collection covers surrealism, antiquity, and modern art with a depth that surprises first-time visitors. Don't skip the Rothko Chapel and the Cy Twombly Gallery across the street — both are part of the broader campus.

Shop the River Oaks Shopping Center and River Oaks District

The original River Oaks Shopping Center on West Gray (built 1937) is one of the country's earliest planned retail strips and still houses local boutiques, a Whole Foods, and the River Oaks Theatre. The newer River Oaks District on Westheimer is a higher-end open-air mall with Hermès, Tom Ford, and a cluster of restaurants. The two together cover most luxury shopping in the city.

Drive River Oaks Boulevard during the Azalea Trail

Every March, the River Oaks Garden Club opens private gardens along the boulevard for the Azalea Trail, a fundraiser that has run since 1935. Even outside the official trail dates, a slow drive down River Oaks Boulevard from Westheimer toward Buffalo Bayou is one of the best free things to do in the city. The mature oaks are at their fullest in late March and April.

Best for a half-day visit

If you have three or four hours, a workable loop is Bayou Bend in the morning, a long walk on Buffalo Bayou, lunch in the River Oaks Shopping Center, and an afternoon film at the River Oaks Theatre. For more context on the neighborhood, see our River Oaks neighborhood guide.

If you want to make a dinner of it, look at our best restaurants in River Oaks — Tony's, March, BCN, and Tiny Boxwoods are all within a five-minute drive of the theatre.

Getting around

Most of these stops are 10 to 15 minutes apart by car. METRO bus service covers Westheimer and Kirby — see our METRO Houston guide — but River Oaks is built around driving. Parking is straightforward at most stops; the River Oaks Shopping Center has a free lot, and Bayou Bend has its own surface lot.

If River Oaks is part of a bigger trip, our two-day Houston itinerary ties it into the rest of the inner Loop, and our month-by-month visiting guide explains why March and October are the best windows for outdoor stops like Buffalo Bayou.
