Richmond is the Fort Bend County seat 30 miles southwest of Downtown Houston, a historic small town founded in 1837 that doubles as the trailhead for one of the best outdoor weekends in the eastern half of Texas. Brazos Bend State Park, the George Observatory, the George Ranch Historical Park, and the downtown Main Street square are all within ten miles of each other, which means a single Saturday in Richmond can cover alligator-watching, telescope viewing, four generations of Texas ranch history, and a brisket dinner.

Below are the things worth driving down for, organized by category. For where to eat after, see our Richmond restaurants guide.

Brazos Bend State Park

Brazos Bend State Park is the headline attraction in greater Richmond. The 5,000-acre park along the Brazos River holds roughly 300 American alligators in its lake system, and the visitor center keeps daily counts. Walk the New Horseshoe Lake Loop or the 40-Acre Lake Trail and you will see them sunning along the banks at almost any time of year. Stay on the trail, keep dogs leashed, and do not approach. Camping sites accept reservations up to five months in advance and the spring and fall weekends fill fast.

The George Observatory inside the park is operated by the Houston Museum of Natural Science and opens its three research-grade telescopes to the public every Saturday night, weather permitting. Tickets are $7 to $12. The 36-inch Gueymard reflector is the largest telescope in the United States open to the public. On clear nights families can see Saturn's rings, Jupiter's moons, and deep-sky objects from a dark-sky perch only 45 minutes from Houston traffic.

George Ranch Historical Park

George Ranch Historical Park is a 23,000-acre working cattle ranch that doubles as a living-history museum. Visitors walk through four eras: the 1830s log cabin of the Jones family, the 1860s Davis plantation house, the 1890s Victorian Davis-Ryon home, and the 1930s George ranch house. Costumed interpreters work blacksmith forges, cattle drives, and cooking demonstrations. The ranch hosts a sheep-herding demo, a chuck-wagon lunch, and a working-cattle program. Family ticket prices run roughly $14 adult, $9 child. Closed Mondays.

Historic downtown Richmond

Downtown Richmond is small but walkable. The 1908 Fort Bend County Courthouse on Jackson Street is still in use, and the surrounding four-block grid holds the Fort Bend Museum, the McFarlane House (1880s, open for tours), the Long-Smith Cottage (1840), and a row of restored brick storefronts along Morton and Main. Park behind the courthouse and walk. Most museum entrances are free or by donation. Plan 90 minutes for a full downtown loop.

Fort Bend Museum

The Fort Bend Museum at 500 Houston Street keeps the local history archive — early colonial documents from the Stephen F. Austin colony, the original survey maps of Fort Bend, photographs of the cotton-and-cattle economy, and rotating exhibits on Czech, German, and African-American settlement of the county. Admission is $7 adult, $5 child, free on the first Saturday of the month. The museum also operates the McFarlane House next door as a docent-led tour.

Fort Bend County Fair

The Fort Bend County Fair runs ten days in late September and early October at the fairgrounds north of Richmond on US-59. Livestock auctions, carnival rides, rodeo nights, demolition derby, BBQ cook-off, and a parade through downtown make this the biggest Richmond event of the year. Day-pass admission runs $10 to $15. Concert nights on the main stage cost extra. The fair has run since 1937.

Smart Financial Centre

Smart Financial Centre in nearby Sugar Land is a 6,400-seat venue that hosts national touring acts, comedy, and family shows. Tour bookings run heavy from October through May. Driving time from downtown Richmond is about 20 minutes via US-90A or US-59. Parking is free and the venue's layout puts no seat more than 200 feet from the stage.

Constellation Field and the Space Cowboys

Constellation Field in Sugar Land is home to the Sugar Land Space Cowboys, the AAA affiliate of the Houston Astros. The season runs April through September with 75 home dates. Lawn seats are $10, club seats $25 to $40. The stadium holds 7,500 and frequently sells out for fireworks nights and giveaway games. Drive time from downtown Richmond is about 20 minutes.

Czech Fest and Richmond seasonal events

Richmond's Czech-Texan heritage shows up at the annual Czech Fest the first weekend of April. Kolaches, klobasniky, polka music, and a Czech-language Mass at SS. Cyril and Methodius Catholic Church anchor the weekend. Other seasonal events include the downtown Christmas Tree Lighting (first Saturday of December), the Fourth of July fireworks at the fairgrounds, and the Easter Tractor Parade through the historic core.

Outdoor and recreation

Beyond Brazos Bend, Richmond residents use the Brazos River corridor for kayaking, the FM-359 country roads for road cycling, and the rural trails outside Simonton for horseback riding. Pecan Grove Country Club and Old Orchard Golf Club cover the local golf options. The Brazos Bend pavilions handle outdoor weddings and family reunions. With kids

Family options run wide in Richmond. Brazos Bend and George Ranch are the headline picks. The Fort Bend Children's Discovery Center is in nearby Sugar Land. Splash pads sit inside almost every master-planned community, and the city pool at Wessendorff Park runs summer hours. The annual Easter Egg Hunt at the fairgrounds draws thousands.

Day-trip planning from Houston

From the Houston inner loop, drive time to Brazos Bend is about 60 to 75 minutes via US-59 south. Plan a half-day for the park alone, or pair the park with a downtown Richmond lunch and a George Observatory star-party night. Our 2-day Houston itinerary covers how to slot Richmond into a weekend trip that also covers Downtown Houston, and the Living in Richmond guide covers what it is like to stay longer than a weekend.
