- Things to Do in Cypress, TX
Cypress sits 25 miles northwest of Downtown Houston, an unincorporated suburban quilt of master-planned communities, parks, and strip-center retail along Highway 290 and the Grand Parkway. The weekend agenda here is firmly family-suburban, not nightlife-driven. Boardwalk at Towne Lake handles the dinner-and-patio nights, Bridgeland and the rest of the master-planned trail systems handle the morning runs and bike rides, Houston Premium Outlets handles the rainy-Saturday shopping, and Cy-Fair ISD high-school sports handle most of the Friday nights in fall.
Here is what locals actually do in Cypress on a normal weekend, plus the seasonal events worth driving into 77429 or 77433 for.
Boardwalk at Towne Lake
Boardwalk at Towne Lake is the closest thing Cypress has to a true town center. The 300-acre boatable Towne Lake sits at the middle of it with a marina, paddleboard and pontoon rentals, and a string of restaurants and patios looking over the water. Summer brings live music on the boardwalk most weekends. December brings a Christmas market and the lake-side tree-lighting that pulls in families from across Cy-Fair. The boardwalk is the only place in Cypress where you can walk a continuous lakefront promenade, eat at three different patios, and rent a paddleboard in one afternoon.
Bridgeland trails and parks
Bridgeland, the master-planned community that has topped the national new-home sales charts two years running, is also a serious recreation destination. The community has more than 60 miles of trails, multiple lakes, and the Lakeland Activity Center with kayak and bike rentals open to non-residents on weekends. Josey Lake and Lakeland Village are the prettiest stretches. The Bridgeland Discovery Tower and Adventure Cove playground anchor the kids' end of it. Most of the trail system is open to the public, the activity-center programming is the part that gets gated.
Houston Premium Outlets and shopping
Houston Premium Outlets on the north side of 290 is the regional outlet anchor for northwest Houston, more than 145 stores from Coach to Nike to Tory Burch. The lineup is the same as what you would find at any Premium Outlets center, but for families on the northwest side of the metro, Cypress is the closest version. The Boardwalk at Towne Lake handles the more upscale lifestyle-shopping side. Towne Lake Plaza and Fairfield Town Center fill in the everyday retail slots.
Family parks and rainy-day plays
Bear Branch Park and Texlake Adventure Park cover the public-park slot, splash pads, playgrounds, walking trails. Heritage Park along Telge Road has the small-town festival programming, the spring crawfish boil and the fall pumpkin patch are local fixtures. For indoor backups, the new Top Golf along the 290 frontage, the Main Event in the area, and Sky Zone trampoline park cover the rainy-Saturday family rotation. Cy-Fair Houston Public Library on Barker Cypress runs a steady weekend kids program.
Cy-Fair sports and high-school Friday nights
Cy-Fair ISD football is the cultural weekend programming most of the fall. Berry Center, the district's shared football and basketball complex on Barker Cypress, hosts Cypress Ranch, Cypress Woods, Bridgeland, and Cy-Fair High games on rotating Friday nights and consistently packs 8,000 to 11,000 fans. If you are new to Cypress and trying to plug in, a Berry Center football night is the fastest way to do it.
Seasonal events worth circling
The Cy-Fair Houston Rodeo BBQ Cook-off in February kicks off the local rodeo season ahead of the main Houston event. The Cypress Top Park Easter egg hunt runs in March or April. Boardwalk Summer Concerts at Towne Lake span June through August. Christmas in Cypress at Boardwalk lights up the marina in early December. The Cy-Fair ISD high-school football playoff weekends in November and December bring big regional games to Berry Center. Where to eat between activities
Most of the day-trip rotation pairs with restaurants in the same strip-center anchors. Lupe Tortilla after the trails. Goodfella's Pizza after the football game. Mia's Table after the boardwalk stroll. The full lineup is in our Best Restaurants in Cypress guide.
