- Brazosport: A Visitor's Guide to Lake Jackson and the Gulf Coast
Brazosport is a cluster of small cities on the Texas Gulf Coast about 55 miles south of downtown Houston: Lake Jackson, Clute, Freeport, and the beach communities of Surfside Beach and Quintana. It's where Houstonians go when they want a real beach day without the amusement-park crowds of Galveston. The main reason to drive down is Sea Center Texas, a free state-run aquarium and fish hatchery that belongs on any Houston-area family bucket list. Add uncrowded Gulf beaches, one of the best birding refuges in Texas, and a handful of waterfront places to eat, and you have a complete day trip from Houston that costs almost nothing to pull off.
The quick list
- Best free attraction: Sea Center Texas in Lake Jackson — no admission, ever.
- Best beach for access: Surfside Beach, with free pedestrian entry and optional beach driving.
- Best beach for solitude: Bryan Beach in Freeport — free vehicle access, minimal crowds.
- Best birding: Brazoria National Wildlife Refuge, 320-plus species on the Great Texas Coastal Birding Trail.
- Best waterfront meal: Belly's on the Brazos in Freeport, on the river.
- Best view with a plate of seafood: Beachfront Deck Bar and Grill, Surfside Beach.
- Best quick seafood stop: Captain Mark's Seafood in Freeport.
- Surprise pick: The Center for the Arts and Sciences in Clute — free natural-science museum and planetarium.
How we chose
We included attractions and restaurants confirmed open via their own official websites or official county, state, and federal agency pages as of October 2026. Every address comes from those same sources. We left out Quintana Beach County Park, which Brazoria County's parks website says is closed through December 31, 2026 for construction and renovation.
Sea Center Texas
Lake Jackson · 302 Medical Drive · Tue–Sat 9 a.m.–4 p.m., Sun 1–4 p.m. · Free admission
Sea Center Texas, run by Texas Parks and Wildlife, is the kind of place you describe to out-of-town guests and they don't believe you: a full marine aquarium with touch tanks for sharks and stingrays, freshwater displays, and a working fish hatchery — and it costs nothing to walk in. Texas Parks and Wildlife describes it as the world's largest red drum hatchery, producing juvenile red drum (redfish), spotted seatrout, and southern flounder that are stocked into Texas bays and estuaries each year.
The outdoor touch tank is worth the drive by itself. You can handle small sharks and stingrays in a shallow pool while staff explain the hatchery program. Hatchery tours are available by reservation for groups. The marine-habitat field guides in the gift shop are genuinely useful for first-time Gulf Coast visitors.
Sea Center is closed Mondays and on some holidays. In 2026, ongoing pond construction is affecting public fishing events at the facility — the aquarium and hatchery tours remain open. Check the TPWD website at tpwd.texas.gov/spdest/visitorcenters/seacenter before you go.
The beaches
Brazosport has two main beach options, each with a different feel.
Surfside Beach
1304 Monument Drive, Surfside Beach, TX 77541 · Open 8 a.m.–10 p.m. · Vehicle pass required for driving on sand
Surfside is the most accessible beach in the Brazosport area: wide, relatively uncrowded, and free to walk once you're parked. Driving and parking on the beach requires either a daily hang-tag pass (typically $15, available from vendors near beach access points) or an annual sticker pass ($30). The pedestrian section west of Starfish Drive has no vehicle traffic, making it quieter for walking. The surf is gentle enough for kids most of the time, though Gulf currents are always worth watching. Confirm the latest fees and rules at the official village website, surfsidetx.org.
Bryan Beach
Bryan Beach Road, Freeport, TX 77541 · Open daily · Free
Bryan Beach is run by the City of Freeport rather than the state, and it's significantly quieter than Surfside. Free vehicle access makes it a regular stop for anglers, families, and anyone who wants a stretch of shore with almost no one on it. The shoreline is undeveloped — shell collecting is worthwhile after storms. No facilities, so bring everything you need.
Both Surfside and Bryan Beach are part of the collection of beaches near Houston that stretch along the Texas Gulf Coast below Galveston.
Brazoria National Wildlife Refuge
2547 County Road 316, Brazoria, TX 77422 · Open year-round · Free · (979) 964-4011
The Brazoria National Wildlife Refuge sits about 12 miles northeast of Lake Jackson and is one of the standout birding sites on the Texas Gulf Coast. U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service counts more than 320 bird species in the refuge. The mix of freshwater marsh, coastal prairie, and tidal flats draws resident species and migrants through every season — the refuge is part of the Great Texas Coastal Birding Trail.
The auto tour at Big Slough Loop is the main draw for visitors without waterproof boots: a drive through wetlands where you can spot wading birds, ducks, and shorebirds from your car window. Whooping cranes from the Aransas National Wildlife Refuge occasionally appear in the Brazosport area during winter. The recently opened Canaan Bend Recreation Area adds fishing access. Call the Complex Office before your first visit to confirm which areas are open and to pick up a map.
If you'd rather walk, the refuge has foot trails around Big Slough that double as birding paths. For other hiking trails near Houston that combine coastal scenery with wildlife, the Brazoria NWR is the best option this far south.
The Center for the Arts and Sciences
400 College Blvd, Clute, TX 77531 · Tue–Sat 11 a.m.–3 p.m., Sun 2–5 p.m. · Museum and gallery free; planetarium $5
The Center for the Arts and Sciences in Clute holds the Brazosport Museum of Natural Science, which houses one of the largest seashell collections in the South, plus the BASF Planetarium and the Brazosport Art League gallery. The museum and art gallery are free. Planetarium shows cost $5 for non-members — call ahead at bcfas.org to confirm show times before you make the trip specifically for it. For families and anyone with an interest in coastal geology, this is a genuine half-day stop that the Brazosport area doesn't advertise nearly enough.
Where to eat
Brazosport is not a restaurant destination, but three places stand out.
Belly's on the Brazos
719 S Avenue A, Freeport · Tue–Sun, closed Monday · (979) 871-4021
Belly's is a waterfront bar and restaurant on the Brazos River in Freeport, with outdoor seating, live music on weekends, and a menu that mixes Gulf seafood with American bar food. Blackened fish tacos, fried shrimp, and lobster roll are the regulars. The draw is the river-facing patio, which makes it easy to spend a couple of hours watching the water. Closed Mondays; check hours before you go.
Beachfront Deck Bar and Grill
750 Bluewater Hwy, Surfside Beach · Tue–Sun, closed Monday · (979) 705-9408
Right on Bluewater Highway at Surfside, this is the clearest view of the Gulf you'll get from a restaurant table in the area. Seafood-leaning menu, outdoor deck seating, and easy to fold into an afternoon on the beach. Open Tuesday through Sunday for lunch and dinner; check hours before you visit.
Captain Mark's Seafood
603 W 2nd St, Freeport · Tue–Sat 10 a.m.–6 p.m., Sun 10 a.m.–4 p.m.
Captain Mark's is a no-frills fresh-catch stop in Freeport — the kind of place that sells whole fish, shrimp by the pound, and prepared seafood plates for takeout. Closed Mondays. Call ahead to confirm hours. If you want Gulf-fresh seafood to eat on the drive home or at the beach, this is the stop.
Getting there from Houston
Brazosport is about 55 miles south of downtown Houston via TX-288 South through Pearland and on into Lake Jackson — roughly an hour with no traffic. Surfside Beach and Freeport are another 15–20 minutes south and east of Lake Jackson. From Clear Lake or League City, take TX-96 west to TX-332 south directly into Lake Jackson. TX-288 itself has no tolls, though parts of Beltway 8 you might use to access it do; an EZ TAG is worth keeping handy. Parking at all Brazosport attractions is free and ample.
The thing no one tells you about Lake Jackson
Lake Jackson has the most confusing streets in Texas, and it's intentional. In 1942, architect Alden B. Dow — son of Dow Chemical founder Herbert Dow — designed the entire city as a company town for plant workers, insisting on winding, organic streets instead of a grid. When he asked his secretary to help name them, she replied: "Don't ask me — you've got all these streets going this way and that way." So he named them exactly that: This Way, That Way, and Any Way. The city once also had a Which Way and a Run Way (near the old airport), both since renamed. Winding Way and Circle Way survive.
