Spacious and well-maintained public library with a clean, inviting kids' area. Enjoyed the “Bones of Texas” photography exhibit in the gallery—great mix of learning and culture.

The first floor is very nice and large. I would highly recommend that Houston invest in their children and bring all of the children’s books from the 4th floor to the 1st. The fourth floor was stuffy and claustrophobic, and no place to enrich children’s minds. Also the bathrooms need a renovation and some way to dry your hands.

I was really disappointed with my experience at the Houston Central Library, especially as someone who came specifically to study and work. Across multiple floors, many of the tables have visible power outlets that simply do not work. I went up and down three floors trying to find a functioning plug. The only outlet I found that actually worked was powering a wall display the only reason I knew it worked was because the display was on. Since I didn’t want to move the small table and chair near the outlet, I sat on the floor next to it so I could continue working while my laptop charged. I asked security for help multiple times during this process. While security consistently walked past me and I did feel safe (which I do appreciate), no one told me I needed to move or offered any kind of solution. Later, a librarian approached me and told me I couldn’t sit on the floor. I explained that I had been sitting on the furniture, but my laptop began dying mid-work and I needed to stay near the only working outlet. I was then told I would have to leave my laptop charging by itself in the corner and wait until it charged before returning to the furniture. That solution didn’t make sense. Libraries are meant for working while devices are charging, and leaving my laptop unattended felt unsafe. What made the situation more uncomfortable was the clear difference in how people were treated. It felt as though staff assumed I was homeless likely because homeless individuals frequent the library and treated me accordingly. Meanwhile, women with children in the same areas were accommodated easily and without issue. That contrast was hard to ignore and left me feeling unfairly judged. Once the situation became uncomfortable and unaccommodating, I decided to leave altogether. Between the lack of working outlets, study-unfriendly furniture, and how this situation was handled, I most likely won’t be returning.

Great selection of books. Friendly and courteous staff. Located next to beautiful city hall and the very nice and historical treasure of Sam Houston Park. Great place to grab a book and walk to the park and read while viewing the historical homes and listening to song birds and watching friendly joggers going by. Highly recommend for a quiet library offering many other types of services a studious person looking to advance knowledge and credentials can go to for their resources!

It's been a long time since I experienced chilling at the library it's clean and the maintenance look ok. This actually is the best place for free resources like wifi, computers, books, and whatever benefits you need to keep moving forward in life. 🤟🏾😎👍🏾
