- NRG Stadium World Cup Rebranding: Houston Stadium Goes Live for 7 Matches
The NRG Stadium World Cup rebranding is now visible in Houston. FIFA's host-venue clean-branding rule strips corporate names from non-sponsor stadiums during the 2026 tournament, and for the 39 tournament days NRG Stadium will operate publicly as "Houston Stadium." The $1 million signage and brand-overlay project covers the stadium exterior, broadcast positions, and the in-bowl LED systems, and the Houston World Cup Host Committee took operational control of the venue and the East Downtown fan zone on May 1, 2026.
Houston is set to host seven World Cup matches at the venue between June 14 and July 4, 2026 — five group-stage fixtures, one Round of 32 match, and a Round of 16 knockout. The participating nations confirmed for group play at the stadium include Germany, Curaçao, Portugal, the Netherlands, Uzbekistan, Cabo Verde, and Saudi Arabia.
The Houston World Cup Match Schedule
- June 14 — Group stage
- June 17 — Group stage
- June 20 — Group stage
- June 23 — Group stage
- June 26 — Group stage
- June 29 — Round of 32
- July 4 — Round of 16
Five of the seven matches are group-stage games and feature confirmed group draw participants Germany, Curaçao, Portugal, the Netherlands, Uzbekistan, Cabo Verde, and Saudi Arabia. The Round of 32 and Round of 16 fixtures will be determined by group-stage results.
Why the Stadium Is Renamed "Houston Stadium"
FIFA prohibits non-sponsor corporate names on host stadiums during the World Cup. NRG Energy is not a FIFA partner, so the NRG branding has been removed for the tournament window. The same rule has applied to every U.S. host city: SoFi Stadium becomes Los Angeles Stadium, MetLife Stadium becomes New York/New Jersey Stadium, Levi's Stadium becomes Bay Area Stadium, and so on. The rebrand reverts to NRG Stadium after the tournament closes on July 19, 2026.
The Stadium: Capacity, Layout, and Soccer Configuration
- Permanent capacity: ~72,000 (the brief's 68K figure refers to the soccer-only configuration used during the World Cup)
- Opened: 2002
- Roof: Retractable; FIFA matches will follow tournament weather and broadcast protocols
- Surface: Natural grass laid over the existing surface for the tournament (FIFA mandate)
- Location: NRG Park, adjacent to the Astrodome, just south of the 610 Loop along Kirby Drive
The stadium is the home of the Houston Texans during the NFL season and has hosted Super Bowl LI (2017) and multiple College Football Playoff championship games. World Cup organizing committees inspected the venue specifically for its retractable roof, parking footprint, and proximity to two interstate highways and the Texas Medical Center.
Tickets
All World Cup tickets are sold through FIFA at fifa.com/tickets. Houston-allocated inventory is distributed through several rounds: the initial draw window opened in late 2025, with secondary windows running through spring 2026 once group-stage matchups were finalized. Resale is permitted only through FIFA's official ticket resale platform — third-party secondary sites are not licensed and FIFA has stated tickets bought through unofficial channels will not be honored at the gate.
Hospitality packages for the seven Houston matches are sold separately through FIFA's official hospitality partner, On Location, and include premium seating, in-venue dining, and parking.
Parking, Transit, and Getting to the Stadium
- Driving: NRG Park parking lots are reserved for tickets that include parking; expect FIFA-enforced traffic management around the venue on match days
- METRORail: The Red Line stops at Stadium Park / Astrodome (5-minute walk to the gates) and at Smith Lands and Reliant Park — the recommended option for matchday
- Bike and rideshare: Drop-off zones will be relocated for the tournament; FIFA wayfinding signage goes up roughly a week before the first match
- Fan Zone: East Downtown — Discovery Green and the surrounding blocks will operate as the official FIFA Fan Festival site for the full tournament window
The host committee took operational control of stadium logistics and the East Downtown fan zone on May 1, 2026.
What Houston Visitors Should Know
Hotel inventory in the Galleria, Med Center, and downtown corridors is being pulled into FIFA's accommodation system. Expect tight availability on match-day windows from mid-June through July 4. Restaurants near the stadium and along Kirby Drive have begun publishing matchday operating hours; expect early opens and shortened menus on heavy attendance days.

After the Tournament
Once the Round of 16 match on July 4 wraps, the host committee will return the venue to NRG Stadium branding ahead of the Texans' 2026 preseason. The temporary grass surface laid for FIFA is removed and the venue reverts to its standard configuration. The NRG name returns to the exterior signage in time for the August NFL preseason calendar.
