Best Caribbean and Jamaican Restaurants in Houston

Date Published

Houston night skyline behind jerk barrel smoker with chicken platter and plantains for a Caribbean dining guide

The best Jamaican restaurants in Houston are anchored in Third Ward, the Fondren Southwest, and the Westheimer corridor, with nine confirmed open spots spread across the city. Reggae Hut on Almeda Road and Cool Runnings on West Bellfort are the most-reviewed. Two spots — Island Flavorz in southeast Houston and Lucian's Caribbean Grill in Clear Lake — bring St. Lucian cooking to a city that mostly knows Jamaican food.

The one thing most Houstonians don't know: Reggae Hut Cafe, the city's most iconic Jamaican restaurant, is owned by Marcus Davis — the same man behind The Breakfast Klub on Main Street. Two of Houston's most celebrated Black-owned comfort-food institutions share the same owner — and if you've had the wings-and-waffles on Main Street and never made it to Almeda Road, you owe yourself the trip.

How we chose

We required each restaurant to show current hours on its own official website or official social media as of October 2026, then cross-checked with Yelp and Google to confirm active operations. We excluded any spot whose web presence had gone dark or whose location appeared closed. There are more Jamaican restaurants in Houston than this list covers — this is the shortlist of spots we could verify with confidence. Hours and menus change: check each restaurant's site before you make the drive.

Third Ward and the Emancipation corridor

Third Ward is the cultural center of Caribbean cooking in Houston. Almeda Road and Emancipation Avenue together host two of the city's most important Jamaican kitchens.

Reggae Hut Cafe

4814 Almeda Rd, Third Ward

A Third Ward institution for more than 25 years, Reggae Hut is the restaurant most Houstonians name first when you ask for Jamaican food. The jerk chicken is marinated overnight and finished on a barrel smoker. The oxtails come in a wine-dark braise that takes most of the day. Both are what Jamaicans call “proper.”

Order: Jerk chicken and oxtails. The beef patties — flaky, spiced-meat pastry sold hot from the case — are the underrated move on this menu. Authentic beef patties are not commonly done right in Houston, and Reggae Hut's are.

Typically open Monday–Saturday 11 a.m.–9 p.m., Sunday 11 a.m.–6 p.m. Check reggaehutcafe.com before you go. See more nearby options in our Third Ward restaurant guide.

Caribbean Jerk Palace

3803 Emancipation Ave, Third Ward

A newer entrant on the Third Ward corridor, Caribbean Jerk Palace opened in 2025 and has built a following with its late-night weekend hours — the kitchen runs until midnight on Fridays and Saturdays. If you're hungry after an event or night out, this is one of the few serious Caribbean kitchens in Houston still open past 10 p.m.

Order: Jerk chicken and oxtails are the signatures. Curry goat and fresh seafood specials rotate; ask about the weekend board.

Typically open Monday 4 p.m.–10 p.m., Tuesday–Thursday noon–10 p.m., Friday–Saturday noon–midnight, Sunday noon–10 p.m.

Westside and Fondren Southwest: the veterans

Two of Houston's longest-standing Jamaican restaurants are on the southwest side of the city, anchoring a Caribbean community that has been in that part of town for decades.

Cool Runnings Jamaican Grill

8270 W Bellfort Ave, Fondren Southwest

Founded in 2009 by Chef Terron Henry, Cool Runnings is consistently the most-reviewed Jamaican restaurant in Houston — more than 1,000 Yelp reviews and a 4.4-star Tripadvisor rating as of October 2026. It opens at 8 a.m. on weekdays, which makes it one of the very few spots offering a full Jamaican breakfast in Houston, not just lunch and dinner.

Order: The oxtails are what most reviewers mention first. Curry goat is a close second. The “Rasta Pasta” — jerk chicken over pasta in a creamy jerk sauce — is a comfort dish worth ordering on a second visit.

Hours: Monday–Thursday 8 a.m.–10 p.m., Friday–Saturday 8 a.m.–11 p.m., Sunday 10 a.m.–10 p.m.

Caribbean Jerk Cuisine

9334 Richmond Ave, Westheimer corridor

Open since April 2006, Caribbean Jerk Cuisine has nearly two decades of continuous service — a genuine rarity in the Houston restaurant industry. The menu leads with oxtail stew and jerk chicken, with curry chicken and vegan options alongside the Jamaican classics.

Order: The oxtail stew is the flagship. The vegan options are a point of difference from most Jamaican kitchens in the city.

Note the limited hours: Tuesday–Thursday noon–8 p.m., Friday–Saturday noon–9 p.m. Closed Sunday and Monday.

Creative takes: the new guard

Jamaica Pon Di Road

2213 S Victory Dr, Acres Homes

Chef Gareth Powell grew Jamaica Pon Di Road from a food truck into a brick-and-mortar in Acres Homes, north of the Heights. What sets it apart from a traditional Jamaican kitchen is the creative mash-ups: jerk chicken eggrolls, an oxtail cheesesteak (braised oxtail served Philly-style on a hoagie roll), and drunken plantains (finished in a sweet liquor glaze).

Order: The oxtail cheesesteak is the Houston-exclusive move on this list. Get the jerk chicken eggrolls to share at the table. Drunken plantains sell out early, so order them when you sit down.

Epican Authentic Jamaican Restaurant

5700 Highway 6 N, Suite 180, Addicks/Northwest Houston

Formerly called Island Spice Authentic Jamaican Restaurant, Epican rebranded when its owner relocated to Houston in 2024. It's the go-to option if you're in the Energy Corridor, Katy, or the Addicks area — a part of town that doesn't have many Caribbean options.

Order: The Epican Oxtail is the restaurant's signature preparation. Jerk chicken and curry goat are also on the menu.

Hours: Monday 11 a.m.–7:30 p.m., Tuesday–Saturday 11 a.m.–9 p.m., Sunday noon–9 p.m.

Beyond Jamaica: St. Lucian and pan-Caribbean

Houston's Caribbean dining mostly skews Jamaican, but two spots offer something distinctly different from the standard jerk-and-oxtail lineup.

Island Flavorz

11051 Fuqua St, Southeast Houston

Island Flavorz, open since 2018, is one of the few St. Lucian-influenced restaurants in Houston — a meaningful distinction from Jamaican cooking. St. Lucian cuisine leans heavily on salt fish, bake (a fried dough bread), and seafood preparations you won't encounter at Jamaican spots. The owner runs “Flavor Fridays,” a late-night service that goes until midnight.

Order: Salt fish and bake — the St. Lucian national dish — is not replicated anywhere else in Houston that we found. Order it. Oxtail, curry goat, and Rasta Pasta are also on the menu for anyone who wants a point of comparison between St. Lucian and Jamaican cooking.

Hours: Tuesday–Thursday 10 a.m.–7 p.m., Friday 9 a.m.–midnight, Saturday noon–10 p.m. Closed Sunday and Monday.

Lucian's Caribbean Grill

1035 Clear Lake City Blvd, Clear Lake

Lucian's earned a 4.7-star Yelp rating with nearly 200 reviews as of October 2026 — strong numbers for a suburban restaurant. It's the destination pick if you're near Johnson Space Center, League City, or the Friendswood area. The owner brings both Jamaican and St. Lucian influences to the menu.

Order: The jerk chicken with the restaurant's signature guava jerk sauce — the guava adds a fruity, jammy layer you won't find at most Houston jerk spots. Chicken roti (curried chicken in a thin flatbread) is the Caribbean-Indian crossover dish to try.

Hours: Monday–Thursday 11 a.m.–9 p.m., Friday–Saturday 11 a.m.–10 p.m. Closed Sunday. More options near Clear Lake in our Clear Lake restaurant guide.

Caribbean Tingz

5015 Westheimer Rd, Suite 1295, Galleria area

Caribbean Tingz is the fast-casual entry on this list — a build-your-own bowl concept near the Galleria with jerk proteins over rice and peas. It's the pick for a quick lunch around Westheimer, or for introducing someone to Caribbean flavors without a full sit-down commitment.

Order: A bowl with jerk chicken or jerk pork over rice and peas, with plantains and coleslaw on the side.
