- Best Burgers in Galveston, TX: 8 Joints Worth the Drive
The best burgers in Galveston are at eight spots spread across Galveston Island, from the Strand Historic District near the cruise terminal to the far west end of the island where the road runs out toward the bay. This guide covers Galveston Island only — everything between the San Luis Pass to the west and the Bolivar Ferry terminal to the east. Crystal Beach and the Bolivar Peninsula are on the other side of the bay and are not included.
What makes Galveston's burger scene worth the hour from Houston is the settings. You can eat on a working fishing pier, at a harbor table overlooking the port, on a covered outdoor patio one block from where cruise ships dock, or at a neighborhood café on a residential street where Galveston people actually live. Prices run from $13.50 for a Classic Backyard Burger at a dedicated burger bar to $19 for a lunch-only steakhouse build with avocado and signature sauce.
The quick list
- Dedicated burger bar: Playground Burger Bar, The Strand — seven Angus patties including the Texas Jam Burger with raspberry jam, cream cheese, and jalapeños
- Best Strand evening pick: Yaga's Café, The Strand — half-pound chuck, short rib, and brisket blend, chargrilled
- Seawall self-proclaimed champion: Nick's Kitchen & Beach Bar — the restaurant calls its own burgers the “juiciest on Galveston Island”
- Pier dining: Jimmy's on the Pier, east Seawall — free pier access with your meal, mushroom truffle burger
- Harbor views: Willie G's, Pier 21 — Signature G's Burger with avocado and bacon, waterfront setting
- Upscale lunch stop: Rudy & Paco, Post Office Street — Paco Supremo ($19), half-pound with avocado and bacon, lunch only
- Neighborhood morning-to-afternoon spot: Sunflower Bakery & Cafe, midtown — scratch-made, lunch burgers from 11am
- Worth the west-end drive: Waterman's Restaurant — Classic Cheeseburger, “Best Hamburgers” nominee, far west island
How we chose
Each spot on this list was confirmed currently open via its own official website as of October 2026, with a burger on the published menu. We passed on chains and focused on places with a reason to sit down: a great view, a unique build, or a setting that only exists in Galveston.
One note: Mosquito Cafe at 628 14th Street has been a Galveston institution for years, but its website shows the café temporarily closed since May 5, 2025. Check mosquitocafe.com before you plan a trip around it.
The Strand
The Strand Historic District is Galveston's main street — Victorian commercial buildings, bars, restaurants, and shops running parallel to the waterfront. Both burger spots here are within walking distance of the Pier 21 cruise terminal.
Playground Burger Bar
2325 Strand · Open Mon, Thu–Sun; closed Tue and Wed
Playground is specifically a burger bar — not a bar that happens to have a burger on the menu. Seven Premium Angus patties on house rolls anchor the kitchen, from the Classic Backyard ($13.50, lettuce, tomato, pickles, and onions) to the Trail Boss with goat cheese, sautéed mushrooms, and onions ($16.50). The one to order for the “I didn't know that” moment: the Texas Jam Burger ($16), which pairs the patty with raspberry jam, cream cheese, pickled jalapeños, and lettuce. It sounds like it shouldn't work. It does.
The covered outdoor bar has arcade games and hosts live music events. It's one block from the Pier 21 cruise terminal, which makes it the obvious stop if you're spending a day ashore from a ship. Kitchen hours run until 7pm most days, 9pm on Friday and Saturday.
Best for: A dedicated burger run near the cruise terminal. The seven-burger menu is the widest on the island.
Yaga's Café
2314 Strand · Mon–Thu 11am–9pm, Fri 11am–2am, Sat 10:30am–2am, Sun 10:30am–9pm
Yaga's has been an anchor on The Strand for decades, and the burger build shows it: a half-pound blend of Angus chuck, short rib, and brisket, chargrilled and served with your choice of side. The Yaga Burger ($14.99) is lettuce, tomato, and pickle — no fuss. The Death Burger ($16.99) adds bacon, mushrooms, jalapeños, chili, and American cheese. There's also a turkey burger and an eggplant veggie patty if someone in the group needs one, plus three mini sliders for $13.99 if you want something lighter.
The outdoor patio runs late on weekends, which makes this the right move after exploring the Strand's galleries and bars.
Best for: A classic Galveston night out with options for the whole group.
Along the Seawall
Seawall Boulevard runs along the Gulf side of Galveston Island for roughly 10 miles. Three of our picks are spread along it at different points.
Nick's Kitchen & Beach Bar
3802 Seawall Blvd · Sun–Thu 11am–9pm, Fri–Sat 11am–10pm
Nick's says it serves “the freshest seafood, juiciest burgers and fattest po’boys on Galveston Island” — a big claim for a competitive street. The Nick's Classic Burger ($13.99) is 8 oz. of fresh ground beef on a house-made bun with lettuce, tomato, red onion, pickles, and creamy burger sauce. The Cardiac Arrest ($16.49) adds bacon, fried onion strings, cheddar, Ranch, and BBQ sauce. Both come with French fries.
The beach is directly across the boulevard. Order here and you can be on the sand inside five minutes.
Best for: Seawall visitors who want a burger and a beach afternoon in the same stop.
Jimmy's on the Pier
9001 Seawall Blvd · Sun–Thu 11am–9pm, Fri–Sat 11am–10pm
Jimmy's sits at the east end of the Seawall, built on a pier over the Gulf. Order a meal and you get free pier access — you can walk the planks over the water, watch fishing, or stand at the rail with a drink. The mushroom truffle burger is the one regulars call out specifically.
If you're spending time on this end of the island, the Galveston Pleasure Pier is a short drive west.
Best for: Pier dining with Gulf views. There's no other burger spot in Galveston where you eat over the water.
At the harbor
Willie G's
2100 Harborside Dr (Pier 21) · Sun–Thu 11am–9pm, Fri–Sat 11am–9:30pm
Willie G's is a full seafood restaurant, but its lunch menu carries two solid burgers. The Signature G's Burger ($16) layers avocado, Monterey Jack, cheddar, and bacon on a patty with lettuce, tomato, and red onion. The Classic Cheese Burger ($15) is the simpler version with cheddar, lettuce, tomato, and red onion. The Pier 21 location puts you next to the tall ship Elissa and a short walk from the Bryan Museum.
Best for: A harbor lunch when you don't want to choose between seafood and a burger.
Post Office Street and downtown
Rudy & Paco
2028 Post Office St · Lunch and dinner; check current hours
Rudy & Paco is Galveston's long-running upscale Latin restaurant — white tablecloths, serious wine list, and a dress code at dinner. But at lunch (shorts are fine), the Paco Supremo Burger ($19) shows up as a half-pound patty with lettuce, tomato, avocado, bacon, and cheese with the restaurant's signature sauce, served with fries. A burger at a restaurant that treats it like a proper dish.
Note that the Paco Supremo is listed on the lunch sandwich menu, not the dinner menu. Come at midday.
Best for: A burger you can order at a table with a real wine list.
A neighborhood lunch stop
Sunflower Bakery & Cafe
512 14th St · Wed–Mon 7am–5pm, closed Tuesdays
Sunflower is the scratch-made neighborhood café on 14th Street, open for breakfast, brunch, and lunch daily except Tuesday. The lunch menu runs from 11am and includes a burger alongside salads, soups, and daily specials. The baked goods and homemade biscuits are what the place is known for, but the burger fits the same from-scratch ethos.
Go here if you're spending a morning in Galveston's residential historic districts — near the Bishop's Palace or Ashton Villa — and want to stay off the Seawall for lunch. See our best brunch in Galveston guide for the full neighborhood café picture.
Best for: A low-key lunch in Galveston's residential core.
The west end
Waterman's Restaurant
14302 Stewart Rd · Sun 11am–9pm, Mon–Thu 4pm–9pm, Fri–Sat 11am–10pm
Waterman's is at the far west end of Galveston Island, past the residential neighborhoods, about 20 minutes from The Strand. The Classic Cheeseburger is an 8 oz. Angus patty on a sweet bun with cheddar, lettuce, tomato, onion, and pickles, served with Potato House Dipper Fries. The restaurant has been nominated for best hamburgers in the area, per its own website.
This pick is specifically for people spending the day out west — near Galveston Island State Park or the west beach — who want a proper sit-down meal away from the Seawall crowds. On weekdays (Mon–Thu), the kitchen doesn't open until 4pm, so plan accordingly.
Best for: A west-end day. A morning walk at the state park, then dinner at Waterman's.
Save this: the Seawall burger run
If you're spending a full day in Galveston, this route covers the island from the Strand end eastward and back:
- Lunch at Nick's Kitchen & Beach Bar (3802 Seawall) — burgers and a quick walk across to the beach.
- Afternoon on The Strand — stop at Playground Burger Bar (2325 Strand) for a Texas Jam Burger and arcade games, or Yaga's (2314 Strand) for the Death Burger and patio drinks.
- Late afternoon at Jimmy's on the Pier (9001 Seawall) — free pier access and a beer over the Gulf.
Don't drive between stops if you're drinking. Galveston is small enough that ride-shares are fast and cheap.
