Dream Con is a three-day anime, gaming, and pop culture convention held annually in Downtown Houston at the George R. Brown Convention Center, 1001 Avenida de las Americas. Founded in 2018 by Mark Phillips and the YouTube collective RDCWorld (Real Dreamers Change the World), it describes itself as Texas’s only Black-owned gaming and anime convention. The event covers anime screenings, competitive gaming tournaments, a cosplay contest and runway, an artist alley, Main Stage concerts and celebrity appearances, and sports programming — all under one downtown roof.
Dream Con drew over 45,000 badges in 2026, its largest attendance ever. The 2025 edition was its first year in Houston after the convention moved from Austin. Megan Thee Stallion appeared in cosplay at the 2025 event and announced an animated series in development with Amazon Prime Video — the kind of moment you don’t get at most conventions.
This year’s dates
Dream Con 2026 ran July 10–12, 2026 at the George R. Brown Convention Center. Dream Con 2027 is already announced for June 18–20, 2027 at the same venue. Check dreamconvention.com for confirmed dates and badge availability each year, as schedules are announced via the convention’s official channels.
What happens at Dream Con
Exhibit hall and artist alley
The exhibit hall is where exhibitors, brand sponsors, and merchandise vendors set up. The artist alley runs alongside it — independent creators selling prints, commissions, and handmade goods. Budget at least an hour here, and bring both card and cash; not every independent artist accepts card.
Gaming hall and tournaments
The gaming hall runs open-play stations and structured tournaments throughout the weekend. Dream Con 2026 headlined a Marvel Rivals tournament. Tournament brackets are posted in the official Dream Con app.
Main Stage and panels
The Main Stage hosts the weekend’s marquee moments: celebrity fireside chats, musical performances, and major game or anime announcements. Dream Con 2026 featured a live comedy special and programming across breakout rooms. Panels run in breakout rooms covering anime deep-dives, creator conversations, career panels, and industry Q&As. Popular panels fill fast; download the app and check the RSVP requirements before you arrive. Premium badge holders get priority Main Stage access without needing to RSVP separately.
Cosplay contest and runway
Dream Con runs two distinct cosplay events, and it’s worth understanding the difference.
The Cosplay Contest is for handmade builds. At least 70% of your outfit must be crafted by you — shoes and wigs don’t count toward that threshold. Judges score on construction quality, accuracy, and creativity. Entry is free and open to all badged attendees.
The Cosplay Runway welcomes both handmade and purchased costumes, making it the more accessible option if you want to show off your fit without competing on craftsmanship. Both events require advance applications via the convention website before a published deadline.
Prop rules to know before you pack: All prop weapons go straight to the Prop Check Desk on arrival and must be peace-bonded before you enter the floor. Real firearms are banned entirely, including for licensed carriers. No metal, sharp, or blunt weapons — swords, bats, and similar items are not allowed regardless of how realistic-looking they are. Prop guns are permitted if they are clearly non-functional and carry bright-colored tips. Confetti, loose glitter, smoke effects, and fire are not allowed on the runway. Costume coverage must be public-appropriate — no nudity — and shoes are required at all times.
Sports and community programming
Dream Con runs a charity basketball game and additional sports events each year, plus a Career Arc track with panels on breaking into gaming, animation, entertainment, and creative industries. This makes it meaningfully different from conventions that focus only on fandom; Dream Con actively pitches itself as a professional and creative pipeline for people who want to work in the industries they love.
How we chose what to cover
All policies, prices, and programming in this guide come directly from dreamconvention.com, the convention’s official social accounts, and its official app. Badge prices and dates are confirmed for Dream Con 2026; verify at dreamconvention.com before purchasing for future editions.
When to go
Saturday has the densest programming and the biggest Main Stage events, but it also draws the largest crowds and carries the highest single-day price ($90). Friday is lighter on attendance and costs $75. Sunday is the most relaxed day and the cheapest single-day option ($60), though some exhibitors begin packing up before the official close.
If you’re doing all three days, the Premium badge is worth evaluating: it adds an hour of early exhibit hall access each day, priority lines for Premier and Main Stage events without a separate RSVP, access to the Deluxe Lounge, a merchandise discount code, and a welcome bag with a Dream Con collectible.
Tickets
Badges are sold at DreamCon.tixr.com. Weekend (3-day) badges start at $150 in the early-bird period and rise to $155 when early pricing closes. Premium 3-day badges are $350. Single-day badges run $75 on Friday, $90 on Saturday, and $60 on Sunday. Children 5 and under attend free, with a maximum of two free children per paying adult. Ages 6–17 require a standard admission badge. Children 12 and under must be accompanied by an adult at all times inside the venue.
Premium badges typically sell out before Weekend badges, and Weekend badges sell out before single-day options. Buy as early as your schedule allows.
Getting there and parking
The George R. Brown Convention Center sits at 1001 Avenida de las Americas. From I-45, take the McKinney or Pease exits. From I-10 East, take Spur 527 South toward downtown.
By car: The closest dedicated parking is the Avenida North Garage at 701 Avenida de las Americas, connected to the north end of GRB, with 1,846 spaces. Enter from Capitol Street heading north or Rusk Street heading south. The Tundra Garage at 1515 Jackson Street holds 2,478 spaces and is a short walk south of the center. Note that the Avenida Central Garage (1002 Avenida de las Americas) is temporarily closed. Allow extra time during Dream Con weekend; event-day rates apply and spaces fill early on Saturday. The Dream Con 2026 guide specifically recommends considering public transit or rideshare as an alternative.
By transit: METRO’s rail and bus network serves the GRB area well. The METRORail Red Line stops at Convention District (Bell) and Main Street Square, both within a 10-minute walk of the convention center entrance. Flying into IAH? METRO’s 500 IAH Downtown Direct express bus reaches downtown at considerably less cost than a rideshare. Downtown Houston parking in surrounding blocks is also an option if you arrive before 9 a.m.
Connected hotels: Both the Hilton Americas-Houston and the Marriott Marquis Houston connect directly to GRB via indoor walkways, which matters in July when Houston’s heat index is routinely above 100°F. Book early; both properties sell out for Dream Con weekend.
Food near the convention center
Food service inside and immediately adjacent to the convention center includes Pappadeaux Seafood Kitchen, Grotto (Italian and pizza, directly adjacent to GRB on Avenida Houston), Kulture, and Saltgrass Steak House. Note that Dream Con does not allow outside food or beverages inside the event footprint, so your options are the convention’s own food vendors or the connected dining before you badge in for the day.
POST Houston, a converted post office a short walk north of GRB, is a good option for a meal or a drink outside convention hours. For a sit-down dinner after a long day, the best restaurants in Downtown Houston guide covers the full range of options within a few blocks. The EaDo neighborhood — directly east of the convention center — has several quick-bite options and 8th Wonder Brewery if you want a post-Saturday pint. Our EaDo restaurant guide has the full list.
What to do nearby
Discovery Green is a free public park one block from GRB. It’s the best place to decompress between sessions, and it often has its own programming on summer weekends. Meow Wolf Houston at the Marq*E Entertainment Center is about 10 minutes by rideshare and works well as a Friday night warm-up or a Sunday wind-down. The Houston Theater District is a 15-minute walk west.
If you’re in town for the full week, Houston’s summer events calendar often has additional programming running concurrently with the convention.
